EncaptureMD Documentation & FAQ

What report output formats are available to send to my EMR/HIS?

Updated on

EncaptureMD reports can be sent to RIS/HIS/EMR as either

  • PDF
  • Text-only
  • RTF

What we send depends on what the RIS/HIS or EMR can receive.

PDF is preferred as it preserves the layout and can shows Bold, Italics, allows for different font sizes, contain diagrams, images, logos and the MD’s signature. It also prints and faxes very well. Your hospital system must support storage and viewing of PDF files to make this work.

Text reports contain minimal formatting. EncaptureMD uses spaces to create the equivalent of tabs. However, in order to space properly, the report must be viewed with a fixed-width font like Courier. Otherwise the columnar alignment is off. Any table in a report must use a fixed width font to be properly legible. For rare circumstances, we have a report that can use any font.

RTF is essentially a text report in an RTF format. RTF support by hospital systems is quite variable, so we keep the report clean and simple to be as broadly compatible as possible.

This is the same normal study shown in each format.

PDF

The PDF report is typically the most attractive choice and allows for the most flexibility in report design.

Requirements: Ability to display the report in EMR/HIS as a PDF. For IT, the report is typically sent either as a folder drop or through HL7 as base 64 encoded text.

Limitations: Requires more storage space in EMR.

Advantage: Will maintain all formatting, allows for logos, diagrams, modality images, MD signature. PDF is locked to prevent tampering with the report after it is created. Printed copies look the same. Printed color diagrams still look OK in black and white.

Text Report - Fixed width Font

This report maintains some formatting by adding spaces to create alignment. It only works with fonts like Courier where each character takes up the same amount of space, like a typewriter.

Requirements: Ability to display the report in EMR/HIS using a fixed-width font.

Limitations: Cannot display images, text formatting (like font size, bold, italics, etc)

Advantage: Will maintain table formatting. Tables cannot be formatted with a Proportional font.

Text Report - Proportional Font

This is the same report shown with a proportional font. Note the mis-alignment. In some cases this might be acceptable, but tables become unreadable.

Text Report - Any font

This report is the most similar to a dictated output. It does not attempt to align any part of the report. It is typically longer and less readable, but contains all the same information.

Requirements: None.

Limitations: Cannot display images, text formatting (like font size, bold, italics, etc) or tables.

Advantage: Works anywhere text can be received.
